The interwoven threads of Kirsty Lowry’s practice are, literally and metaphorically, brought together through basketry.
Using foraged natural material, including wild grasses, leaves fallen from municipal planting or collected waste materials, I use ancient basket making techniques to make vessels, cordage and nets. Entwined in this act of making and handling of raw materials is the experience of connecting to the elemental qualities of material and place.
Teaching is as inherent to this practice as the studio making; through a shared process of weaving the earthy smell of dampened grasses rouse remembered stories and the deep value of embodied knowledge construction is felt.
